Mark Ronson & Miley’s new track is here
Following the success of his previous record, Uptown Funk with Bruno Mars, expectations were high for musician and producer Mark Ronson. His new track “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart” featuring Miley Cyrus, released November 30th 2018, is a remarkable follow up.
Mark and Miley wrote the song together and Ronson describes the experience as rather humbling; “I don’t know why I get to record with some of the greatest vocalists of my generation.” Ronson says he has tried to organise the collaboration with Miley for four years, they initially spoke on text before meeting earlier in 2018. Since watching Miley on the Saturday Night Live 40th anniversary, where Miley sang Paul Simon’s 50 ways to leave your lover and he was “transfixed”, got her number and approached her. Although it took them 4 years to get the song out they say it’s perfect timing, Miley says “the song happened when it was supposed to”.
Mark Ronson’s hip-hop-dance production is contrasted beautifully with Miley’s country vocals ultimately creating a half dance, half country track which Ronson describes as a “sad banger”. Ronson took the classic country sounding song and made it fit into the radio for people to dance to, a hybrid of throwback music and modern pop. The track is incredibly unique, with immensely catchy hooks. It already has over 22 million streams on Spotify alone. Ronson describes Miley as “one of the best singers I’ve ever recorded” and he is delighted to be working with her on her 7th album. Ronson’s own album is out in March 2019 and Miley’s is to follow. Ronson’s new album, as he puts it “something I’m really proud of’, which has been shown by his tattoo of the broken heart disco ball.
The video shows “Miley’s wild ride” where Miley is being chased by police cars, followed by moody club scenes and finally featuring Ronson where he jumps into the car. Cyrus describes the video as portraying the heartbreak that we see every day rather than just the heartbreak in love. Miley says it is a video that “happily marries pop culture and politics”.
Ronson began his career by making his name as a DJ on the New York club scene in 1993 and quickly became known for his diverse, genre-spanning selection, whilst being heavily influenced by the funk and hip hop of New York in the 90s. Ronson has been high in the charts since his second album Version included three top 10 singles, earning him a Brit award for Best British male Solo artist in 2008. In 2004, Mark Ronson formed his own record label. His most notable works have been with Bruno Mars on Uptown funk and producing many songs with the legendary Amy Winehouse.
Miley has always been influenced by country music, with Dolly Parton as her godmother. Following her Disney star childhood, Cyrus became the youngest performer in history to have four number one albums on the chart at just 16. Both Ronson and Cyrus have been in the industry for years and their collaboration is really something special.
The pair put on a surprise collaboration at G-A-Y in London last month where they danced in confetti, much to the delight of their fans.
